The inaugural Peter Minogue Rocks and Hearts Charity Curling Championship event begins tonight at the North Bay Granite Club.
Opening ceremonies will take place at 6:30 p.m. and will be followed by a draw including Olympic gold medalist skip Brad Jacobs and three-time Canadian and world champion Brent Laing will be broadcast live at 7:15 p.m. on YourTV.
The final game on Sunday at 12 p.m. will also be televised.
The tournament is named after the late Peter Minogue, a distinguished community leader dedicated to North Bay, its businesses and economic well-being, and most importantly, its people. Minogue was a multi-talented athlete and inducted into the North Bay Sports Hall of Fame in 2008. In curling, he skipped a number of winning teams, nearly making it to the Brier on more than one occasion.
The fundraising tournament will equally benefit three local non-profits focused on the health and wellness of the community, the Canadore College Foundation, Military Family Resource Centre and North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation.
Funds will respectively support student scholarships, military family support and expanded hospital services, new programs, and bring leading-edge medical technology and treatment.
