Transport takes to residential ditch; driver charged

'I just heard a noise and took a look outside'

The driver of a transport is facing charges after his rig damaged a significant portion of a residential street on Monday night while trying to turn onto a narrow residential street.

North Bay Police Service responded to the single vehicle collision that occurred in the area of O’Brien Street and Dudley Avenue, North Bay, at approximately 8:45 p.m.

The transport truck was located in a ditch and the operator was charged with two Provincial Offence Notices:

  • Disobey Sign as per Section 182(2) of Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act
  • Fail to Report Damage to Property on Highway as per Section 201 of Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act

City crews blocked off a portion of Dudley Avenue in North Bay Tuesday afternoon as they repaired a large portion of the shoulder and ditch on the residential avenue.

Witnesses say the transport was driving on O'Brien Street near the bypass and as it attempted to turn onto Dudley Avenue, the vehicle slid off the road and sunk into the shoulder and ditch causing significant damage.

"It actually happened while I was watching the Leafs game," said one Dudley Avenue resident.

"I just heard a noise and took a look outside. Because that one corner streetlight is out, it was hard to see it fully so I thought it was a dump truck initially."

A tow truck was called to assist in removing the big transport from the ditch.
