Using a shovel as a weapon has a North Bay man facing some serious charges,

On February 22,  a man was seen in the area of McGibbon Street approached the victim, who was a motorist driving in the area. The man threw a shovel at the victim’s vehicle.

The next day, the same victim was returning to his home when he noticed the previous day's attacker was in the area. The stranger approached the victim’s vehicle and began yelling before leaving the area. Police arrived and located the man in a nearby park, where he was behaving in "an erratic manner" according to police.

After a brief foot pursuit, the man was arrested and charged.

Police say the victim and accused are not known to one another. The victim was not injured.

On February 24, while in custody awaiting a bail hearing, the man assaulted a police officer and was additionally charged.

The accused in this incident is Karl Derrah, 44, who is charged with:

  • Possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose
  • Criminal harassment – threatening conduct
  • Assault a peace officer

Derrah was held in custody pending a bail hearing at the North Bay Courthouse.
