Flood warning continues for the Lake Nipissing shoreline

'Shoreline areas are vulnerable to strong westerly winds that amplify local water level and wave action'

A flood warning continues for the Lake Nipissing shoreline in North Bay and Callander and the Parks Creek watershed.

A flood outlook has also been issued for the La Vase River downstream of Lakeshore Drive in North Bay, according to the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority (NBMCA).

“Water levels on Lake Nipissing have stabilized above the maximum non-damage threshold,” stated Angela Mills, NBMCA Flood Duty Officer. “Shoreline areas are vulnerable to strong westerly winds that amplify local water level and wave action,” she added.

Environment Canada predicts rain for four of the next five days. Wind is from the south today, but is forecast to come from the west tomorrow at 9 km/h gusting to 15.

The Parks Creek Backflood Control structure, located at Eva Wardlaw Conservation Area in North Bay protects homes in the Marshal Park area of West Ferris from high lake levels. It continues operation.

A Colorado Low is forecast to bring rain through the coming weekend. Landscape conditions with dormant vegetation and saturated soils have limited capacity to store additional moisture. Water level and flow on local lakes and rivers may increase in response to the rain.

The La Vase River downstream of Lakeshore Drive is influenced by Lake Nipissing’s high water levels and may be vulnerable to increased flow from upstream.
