It's easily done, You use an ATM, get distracted and forget to take your card.

That's what happened Friday in Sturgeon Falls.

On April 17 at 7:30 p.m., OPP responded to a theft complaint that occurred on King Street in West Nipissing.

The victim had gone to the bank at 3:57 p.m. and used the ATM to complete a transaction.

"The victim forgot to retrieve the bank card upon leaving, but returned within minutes to find it had been stolen," says Constable Michelle Coulombe. "By the time the victim was able to cancel the card, it was discovered that it had been used multiple times, using the tap feature, at several local businesses."

On April 20, after reviewing video surveillance footage from different businesses, officers were able to identify the person. Shortly thereafter, he was and arrested.

Luc LaFond, 50, from West Nipissing, is charged with:

  • Seven counts of fraud under $5,000
  • Possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime under $5,000

LaFond was released by way of an appearance notice and is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on July 2 in West Nipissing.
