The North Bay Selects Century 21 United captured the Under 16 Boys 12th Annual Panhellenic Soccer Championship on the weekend. Century 21 opened the tournament against the host Panhellenic Spitfire with a 0-0 draw. Great saves by Mitch Forte awarded him the shutout. In the second match, Century 21 defeated Walden Italia Flyers 1-0 with a well placed strike by Nick Piquette. Once again, Forte’s strong goaltending gave him his second shutout. Sudbury Italia Flyers provided the opposition in the final game of the round robin. A well organized attack by United resulted in two goals by Michael Carr and one by Anthony Celebre. Century 21 United was able to shut out their opponents for a 3-0 result.
Century 21 finished second in the six-team division to play Sudbury Panhellenic Spitfires in the semi-finals. The United club dominated play throughout the match as Darius Tignanelli provided two goals on their way to a 2-0 win and a place in the championship game. Mitch Forte earned his shutout with a save on a penalty shot that resulted in a rebound and another spectacular save.
The first place Sault Civics, with their perfect record on the weekend, would host the local team in the finals. Century 21 came up with a tremendous team effort on both the defending and attacking side of the ball. Ball control and transitional play lead to the championship goal by Darius Tignanelli to give Century 21 the 1–0 victory. Forte and his team’s defensive efforts gave him an unprecedented perfect record with five shutouts on the weekend.
Most valuable player banners were presented to Kyle Decosta, Darius Tignanelli, Mitch Forte and Nick Piquette with Decosta winning the MVP in the championship game. Other team members include, Zach Deschenes, Nic Tumino, Mike Carr, Andrew Bedard, Mitch Beaulieu, Martin Strasbourg, Anthony Celebre, Keenan Wright, Ryley Valade, Robin Pelletier, Jordi Ortepi, Manager Cindy Carr, Assistant Coach Gaetan Piquette and Coach Mike Tignanelli.
