It’s not the Autobahn, it’s Callander’s main street

Municipality reminds drivers to roll slow through town

When May rolls around, Callander likes to remind folks to slow their roll through town.

It’s all part of the town’s “Take it Slow” campaign, designed to encourage drivers to slow down on Callander’s streets. This year, the Municipality has made some signs for the campaign. One reads “No reason for speedin’ no matter the season,” a nice play on Callander’s motto, “Four Seasons of Reasons.”

Another asks for “More Main Street. Less 401,” which will certainly hit home for many drivers rolling through. The signs have been placed along the Main Street. If you like the message, you can pick one up yourself in the form of a lawn sign for $10. Those are available at the Municipal Office at 280 Main Street North.

Councillor Mike Dell came up with the idea for the campaign and drafted the signs as well. The municipality has been sharing the images and other “take it slow” reminders on its social media pages throughout the month.

“We encourage everyone to take part in this initiative,” municipal staff noted.

“Spring is here and we’re all looking forward to the warmer weather”, said Mayor Robb Noon. “This means we’ll all want to get out and enjoy the parks and beaches. More cyclists are using the roads, and sidewalks are busier with folks walking and jogging.”

Callander also has the annual Pitch in and Spring Clean Up this Saturday, so a lot of people will be out for that. FunFest is on June 29th, and Sirens in the Park is on August 17th, and these big events always bring out the crowds. It’s best to get the word out sooner than later for people to drive slower.

“As we prepare for the summer season — and the many activities we have planned — we’re hoping everyone can play their part in minding their speed and to take it slow for Callander,” Mayor Noon said.

For those who ignore the pleas of the Municipality, the town noted there will also be an increased police presence throughout the month.
